FEDERAL COURT STOPS STATE FURLOUGHS; GRANTS TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER

In a major victory for working people, the U.S District Court for the Northern District of New York has granted a temporary restraining order preventing Governor David Paterson from proceeding with his planned furloughs of state employees.
"CSEA is proud that the court agreed with our contention that this action would cause irreparable harm to our members and undermine state services," said CSEA President Danny Donohue.

At an Albany event, CSEA Tax and Finance member and President, Jackie Goldsmith asked Governor. David Paterson to reconsider his plans for layoffs of employees. Meanwhile, CSEA is greatly encouraged by expressions support from numerous human service and other advocacy organizations through statements to the governor about how ill-considered his plans for layoffs really are.

CSEA Capital Region activist Jackie Goldsmith tells Gov. David Paterson that she doesn't want to see any state workers laid off, and the governor agrees. Click to watch the video.

CSEA Grapevine News:

CSEA Files Charge over Exam Fees
CSEA has filed an improper employer practice charge with the state Public Employment Relations Board, asserting that the state violated the Taylor Law by charging state workers fees for promotional and training exams.

CSEA contends that free access to the exams has been a long-standing economic benefit that the state is canceling without negotiation.

The fees begin for tests announced on or after March 13, and administered on or after May 30. CSEA expects the fees will go in effect while the union tries to overturn them.

MARCH FOR MAIN STREET
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7, 2009
The Tax Local 690 participated in the March For Main Street today with 1000's of other protesters. Participants traveled from every part of the state to be a part of the march. The march begin in Albany's downtown Times Union Center with a pre-march rally. From there, the protesters proceeded up Beaver Street and into Capital Park, which is located just outside of the Capital.
While Governor Paterson was in side delivering his State of the State budget, the protesters stood outside in the freezing rain holding up signs and chanting in protest of his proposed budget cuts.

Governor Paterson is proposing among other things, to lag State employees 5 days pay and wants them to give up their 3% raise in April. CSEA has told Governor Paterson several times that they will not reopen its state contracts.
